210 College Prep English 10
Grade 10, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Suspenseful Completion of Ninth Grade English
Sophomore English fosters an increased understanding of literary terms and an improved ability to interpret literature. It is designed to introduce students to the background, influences and cultural context of written works in American Literature from its beginnings to the present. The course explores and investigates a year long theme of what is commonly known as The American Dream. The focus of this course is to develop students’ proficiency in critical, reflective, and analytical abilities in relation to American literature by strengthening and developing skills in the writing and thinking processes.
Formal expository writing, as well as continued metacognitive reader response writing, is further developed. Students continue their study of vocabulary and conventions of written and oral language.
All college preparatory sophomores complete a unit on the research process, which culminates in their writing a seven to nine page analytical paper.
