224 IB English 12

Grade 12, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Successful Completion IB English 11

IB English 12 is the second year of the higher level IB course. It is designed to fine tune students’ proficiency in critical, reflective, and analytical abilities to investigate the year long theme of The Writer as Social Critic. The course challenges students in terms of investigating literature from a literary, cultural, and aesthetic perspective. As such, the class deals with the societal/cultural context during which the literature was written, how the societal environment influenced the authors, and in what ways the piece has contributes to shaping the course of global history.

In order to most effectively make decisions about the role of the writer and literature in society, the course utilizes an across the content area paradigm approach. In this way, the course relies heavily on integrating related supplementary materials from various disciplines and mediums (historical, political, philosophical, religious, artistic, etc.).

Since the course is writing intensive, students continue with expository and metacognitive work. The course affords students opportunities to engage in diverse analytical inquiry, as well as increase their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and problem solving abilities.

All students enrolled in IB English 12 complete oral examinations as required by the IB program, and take the externally assessed IB English exam in May. They complete a unit on the research process, culminating in their writing a twenty to twenty-five page analytical paper.
