Building Your Own Conscience & Social Justice Morality
Grade 10, 1 credit
Texts: Morality, A Response to God’s Love & The Catholic Youth Bible

Course Description
This course seeks to encourage the students to become persons of character and to assume responsibility in building communities where living morally is the norm.  It recognizes that living a Catholic moral life is a response to the Father’s love, a reflection of Jesus’ message of love, and a journey guided by the Holy Spirit.  The course sets a foundation for Christian morality as the students examine such topics as virtues, conscience, and the nature of personal and social sin.  Then, the teachings of Jesus, Scripture , and the Church provide the basis for the moral decision-making process when presented with such real life issues as sexuality, abortion, euthanasia, war, racism, ageism, information technology (video games, internet) and sexism.

Course Objectives
After successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the foundations of morality given by Jesus Christ
  2. Identify and explain key concepts of Catholic morality
  3. Demonstrate awareness of elements involved in good moral decision making
  4. Explain implications of values and principles of the Ten Commandments applicable today
