Jazz Band
Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: by audition only
Jazz band performs at various events named in the Music Overview, also allowing for solo opportunities at various other school and community events. Students should have music reading skills and be of an intermediate level on their instrument to take this class. Typical instrumentation consists of: saxes, few upper woodwinds, trombones, trumpets, guitar, bass, drum set and piano. In addition to ensemble rehearsal weekly after school, students are strongly encouraged to take private lessons either with the school music teacher or a private instructor to learn individual parts. Participation and preparedness is an important part of this ensemble, as is participation in all performances. Ensemble pieces are selected from a wide variety of musical jazz styles and forms. Musical improvisation is also encouraged.
