Being both an IB Diploma Candidate and an Honor Roll student, how do you manage your academic workload with your demanding athletic schedule?
I spend a lot of time in assorted libraries getting my homework done. I also have a really long bus ride in the morning, and usually I can get my reading done on the bus. For physics and math homework I normally try to get done right after school, then go to practice. I find that having practice in the middle of the evening is truly beneficial: it takes my mind off the schoolwork for a while, and when I finish practice, I’m a lot more focused and ready to get things done. Weekends also provide an excellent opportunity to catch up on homework and projects.
What do you enjoy about the IB Program? What courses are you taking?
I have a full IB schedule, so I am taking IB Math, IB Physics, IB World Religions, IB World History, Dance, IB English, and Spanish III Honors. I really like the IB Program because it is an all-encompassing program that covers a broad spectrum of topics. I like how much it challenges me, and forces time management upon me. I love all of my teachers, and most even try to cover more than the IB Program requires of them. I think that the rigorous classes I’m taking are developing a new thought process or approach to problem solving in general. My teachers challenge me daily to new heights.
In your three years at Prout, how have you grown/changed?
I believe I’ve become a more conscientious student. I look forward to coming to school every day. Prout has taught me new skills that I use daily, especially communication skills and essay writing.
What sports do you play?
I am a member of the Prout Varsity Girls Swimming Team as well as the Varsity Girls Softball Team. I also swim for the Rams Swimming Club, based out of URI. I played soccer for the past two years at Prout, but this year I decided to devote my time to swimming.
How long have you been swimming?
I’ve been swimming pretty much all my life. I first joined the Rams Swim Club when I was seven, but then transferred to the YMCA Dolphins when I was twelve, and now I recently rejoined the Rams this year. I’ve been playing softball since I was about four years old, but swimming is without a doubt my passion.
What has been your most memorable team moment since attending The Prout School?
The most memorable team moment of mine would most definitely be when our 200 Individual Medley relay broke the state record at the Rhode Island State Swimming Meet last year. I remember all of us jumping up and down, screaming, and hugging each other. I remember all other noise was drowned out as we cheered on the other legs of our relay and all eyes were on the clock. We knew we had the potential to break that record, we all knew what we had to do: we just had to go out there and do it.
How do the Prout coaches inspire you?
Ms. Need inspires me every day. I can go into her office and just talk to her about anything at all. She consistently makes me strive to do better, and aspire for better things.
What does being a member of a Prout Athletic team mean to you?
It means that you can only get where you are because of your team, and they make you what you are. You're only one piece of the puzzle, and equally as important as all the rest. I love all of my teammates. We have so much fun together, we get each other really pumped up, and we can all build on each other's energy.
